Hawks Tie La Salle 1-1
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick took the lead in the 83rd minute but gave up the tying goal in the 88th as the Hawks came away with a 1-1 tie with visiting La Salle on Tuesday evening at Elmore Field. The result puts the Hawks’ record at 7-5-4. The Explorers are now 9-7-1.
Hartwick snaps its four-match winless streak and stays unbeaten in overtime this season (2-0-4).
The two teams combined for just five total shots in the first half of play. Offensive chances were generated in the second half, most of which coming from the Hawks.
Mike Rood (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley) was unable to get a good foot on a service from Hamish Ritchie (Aberdeen Scotland/Aboyne Academy) with just under 34 minutes remaining in the match. Six minutes later, Rood returned the favor with a cross to Ritchie that forced a diving stop with Explorer goalkeeper Cameron Keys.
Rood would be at it again with 12 minutes to play as he set up Ritchie once again. Ritchie’s shot was on target but right at Keys.
Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) had another chance with just over eight minutes to go but his shot was blocked. Thirty seconds later, he dribbled past Keys but the ball was cleared out inside the six-yard box by a La Salle defender.
The Hawks capitalized on the resulting corner. Jonny Carr (Sunderland, England/Monkwearmouth School) provided the service with Jack Donaldson (Paisley, Scotland/Mars Hill University) beating his man to the ball to head past Keys for his second tally of the season at the 82:45 mark.
A foul just outside the Hartwick box would result in a free kick for La Salle. Colman Kennedy stepped up and buried his shot from 20 yards away to tie the score at 87:30.
The Explorers registered the only two shots of the overtime periods but neither was troubling for Hartwick keeper Matt Morrish (Brighton, England/St. Bede’s School) who finished the night with two saves. Keyes closed the match with four stops for the visitors.
Hartwick out-shot La Salle 10-8 in the contest. The Explorers generated seven corners to the Hawks’ four.
’Wick wraps up the regular season at home on Saturday, November 5 against Howard. The Hawks are currently tied in the Sun Belt standings with Appalachian State for fourth place.
