Heidelberg comes from behind to beat Denison
GRANVILLE - The Heidelberg University men's soccer team found their way back into the win column on Wednesday, defeating the Big Red of Denison University 2-1. The Student Princes found themselves in a 1-0 hole early, but fought their way back, tying the match before halftime, scored the go-ahead goal early in the 2nd half, and held on for the victory.
Some quick back-and-forth play early in the game did not turn out well for Heidelberg when Denison (4-4-1) scored in the 5th minute for the early lead.
The score held steady until later in the first half when Christopher Koczak found Tyler Eoff for the equalizer. The Student Princes held a slim advantage in shots at the break at 7-6.
Heidelberg continued to apply the pressure in the second period, and it paid off in the 54th minute when Ryan Homoki found the back of the net off of an assist from Hamid Shariff. The Student Prince defense held on the rest of the way, giving the 'Berg a win.
Heidelberg out-shot the Big Red in the match 16-10. Eoff led the Student Prince attack with six shots, three of which being on goal.
Goalkeeper Matthew Stevens bounced back from the early goal and held Denison scoreless the rest of the way, recording four saves in the match.
Following the win, Heidelberg improved to 4-4-2 on the year and will now enter OAC play on a high note. They will have a quick turnaround for their next match, this Saturday, October 4, when they take on Otterbein. That match is scheduled to kick off at 2:00 p.m. at Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
