Henderson Nets Blugolds Overtime Victory

October 5, 2013

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Blugolds.com) — Last season, the UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team had their season come to an end at the hands of UW-Stevens Point in an overtime loss in the semifinals of the WIAC tournament. Saturday, the Blugolds got revenge with an overtime victory of their own, a 3-2 win in the first overtime at Stevens Point.

Caroline Henderson (So.-Duluth, Minn./East) was the hero, scoring just 2:02 into overtime to send the Blugolds (4-3-3, 1-1-1) home with the victory, also their first conference win of the season. Henderson scored on a header off an assist from Paige LeGate (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port).

The Pointers (3-6-2, 1-2-0) scored first in the 19th minute, but Henderson responded with the first goal of the game for UW-Eau Claire just a few minutes later in the 22nd minute on an unassisted goal.

UW-Stevens Point continued the back-and-forth game with a goal to regain the lead in the 40th minute. That is how the first half would end, with the Pointers leading 2-1.

But in the 65th minute, Jackie Nailor (Fr.-Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) tied the game back up with a goal on an assist from Jocelyn Etten (Fr.-Elkhorn Wis./Elkhorn Area).

The two teams weren't able to solve the game in regulation, setting the stage for Henderson in overtime. The Blugolds outshot the Pointers 16-7, including 8-1 in the second half and 2-0 in overtime.

Nina Behrenbrinker (Sr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) made four saves in goal to pick up the win, her fourth of the year. It was the fourth overtime game this season for the Blugolds and the first time they have picked up the win in the extra session.

The Blugolds will continue conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 9 when they travel to UW-Stout for a 7 p.m. matchup.
