High Point picks up 3-1 win over Campbell
HIGH POINT, N.C. - Redshirt-freshman Pat Shelton found the back of the net twice on Wednesday night to lead the High Point University men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Campbell in Big South action at Vert Stadium.
"This was a big win for our team tonight," head coach Dustin Fonder said. "All credit to Campbell, they are a very good team. We had to work very hard defensively to limit their chances. On the other side, I felt we created some very good scoring chances and were able to make the most of our opportunities."
Shelton put the Panthers ahead, 1-0, with a headed goal in the 13th minute of action. Sophomore Ben Burdon carried the ball up the right side and hit a cross back to the center of the Campbell penalty area. Shelton cut inside the CU defender and flicked a header inside the far post for the game's opening goal.
Campbell nearly leveled the score just three minutes later on an attempt from the edge of the box by Justin Franz. The midfielder unleashed a line drive shot which HPU keeper Kody Palmer parried off to the side to maintain the lead.
The Panthers doubled their lead early in the second half when Shelton scored his second of the game in the 49th minute to put HPU ahead, 2-0. Junior Mamadee Nyepon held up the ball in the box and hit a small drop pass to Shelton. The forward split between two defenders and hit a shot into the left side netting.
High Point scored its third goal of the game in the 72nd minute when redshirt-sophomore Erien Campbell found the back of the net on an HPU counter attack. Burdon controlled a loose ball at the edge of the Panther box and dribbled to the midline before hitting a low through ball. Campbell split the CU center backs and touched the ball around the CU keeper before tapping it into an empty net.
The two goal by Shelton gave the freshman the first multi-goal game of his collegiate career. He now sits second on the team with five goals on the season.
Down 3-0, Campbell got a goal back in the 78th minute on a header by Travis Golden. Chirag Shah delivered a long throw into the HPU box where Golden out-jumped the Panther defense for the header to the left post to make the score 3-1.
Campbell finished the game with a 21-16 edge in shots but HPU held a slim 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Shelton finished the game with team-best seven shots for the Panthers.
Palmer made three saves in the game for HPU to pick up his fourth win of the season. Ethan Hall stopped two shots for Campbell in the loss.
High Point improves to 5-7-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the Big South with the win over the Camels. Campbell drops to 4-8-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the Big South.
The Panthers return to the road this weekend when they head to Boiling Springs, N.C., to take on Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. The Runnin' Bulldogs are 9-6-1 overall and 6-3-0 in the Big South following a 1-0 win over Winthop on Wednesday.
