Hilltoppers unable to stop Incarnate Word, 3-2
AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward’s men’s soccer team came up short in its battle against rival Incarnate Word, 3-2, Wednesday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
Incarnate Word (1-1) got the scoring started early in the 16th minute with a shot off of a deflection by forward Carlos Picado. That would be the only goal in the first half as both teams could not capitalize on their chances.
In the second half, St. Edward’s (1-1) started off strong with a diving header in the 56th minute by midfielder Barrett Barger (Freshman, Dallas, Texas) on a cross from James Martin (Junior, Haywards Heath, England).
In the 65th minute the Cardinals were on the attack again and forward Callum Riley got around John Kaschak (Sophomore, Allen, Texas) passing it into the box for a quick tap-in by Picado. He would score again in the 73rd minute off of a breakaway, beating the keeper one-on-one.
Andrew Fox (Freshman, Cambridge, England) answered back, scoring in the 87th minute off of a give-and-go with JR Ellis (Junior, Coppell, Texas), beating the keeper far post. St. Edward’s tried to attack the goal again but was unable to tie up the match before time ran out.
