Holy Cross Falls To Providence, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With the contest tied at 1-1, Brandon Adler scored the game-winner for the Friars with 7:12 left in the second half as the Holy Cross men's soccer team fell to Providence, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Glay Field. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-4-0 overall, while the Friars improve to 2-4-1 overall.
Junior captain Monty Sanders (Temecula, Calif.) took the first shot on goal for either team as his attempt was saved by Providence goalie Byron Regester at the 34:44 mark. The Crusaders then took a 1-0 lead at 38:19 when freshman Andrew Rhodes (St. Louis, Mo.) scored his first collegiate goal. Rhodes knocked in a loose ball from just two yards out. Sophomore goalie Michael Thompson (Cromwell, Conn.) then made two saves to close out the half with the Crusaders leading 1-0. The Friars outshot the Crusaders by a 7-4 margin for the half, while each team had two shots on goal.
At the 55:46 mark, Thompson kept Providence off the scoreboard with a save on a shot by Matt Barry. The Friars tied the contest at 1-1 at 66:54 when Marc Cintron found the back of the net off a pass by Wilder Arboleda. Adler netted the game-winner at 82:48 when he scored on a header off a corner kick by Anthony Baumann. The Crusaders had a late corner kick but were unable to score for the 2-1 final.
Thompson made five saves for the Crusaders, while Regester posted two to earn the win. Providence outshot Holy Cross, 19-6, while the Friars took seven shots on goal and the Crusaders had three. The Friars took nine corner kicks and the Crusaders had two.
The Crusaders return to action when they play a home contest versus Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.
