Holy Cross Shut Out By American, 3-0
WORCESTER, Mass. – Colin Seigfreid, Patrick Mehlert and Conor Osborne each scored a goal for the Eagles as the Holy Cross men's soccer team fell to American, 3-0, in Patriot League men's soccer action on Saturday night at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-5-1 overall (1-1-0 PL), while the Eagles improve to 4-4-2 overall (2-0-0 PL).
American took a 1-0 lead in the third minute when Seigfreid scored on a shot from 18 yards out as Mehlert and Michael Cherry each posted an assist. The Crusaders created a scoring opportunity in the fifth minute when senior captain Monty Sanders (Temecula, Calif.) fired a shot that was tipped over the net by American goalie Billy Knutsen. The Eagles netted their second goal of the match when Mehlert blasted a shot to the back of the net from 20 yards out off a pass from Cherry. Knutsen kept the Crusaders off the scoreboard in the 39th minute when he made a save on a shot by senior Tommy Uttaro (Staten Island, N.Y.).
Uttaro took the first shot on goal by either team in the 68th minute but Knutsen made the save. American found the back of the net for the third time when Osborne scored in the 85th minute. Neither team would take another shot on goal for the 3-0 final score.
Sophomore goalie Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) played the first 45:00 as he allowed two goals and made two saves, while junior goalie Michael Thompson (Cromwell, Conn.) allowed one goal and posted two saves as he played the second 45:00. Knutsen tallied five saves to earn the win. Holy Cross outshot American, 12-11, while the Eagles took seven shots on goal and the Crusaders took five. The Crusaders had two corner kicks and the Eagles took one.
The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 9, when they play at Patriot League opponent Boston University at 7:00 p.m.
