Hope Men's Soccer Downed By Rival Calvin
The Hope College men’s soccer team dropped its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opener at Calvin College 5-1 on Tuesday.
The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Flying Dutchmen. They are now 4-2-2 on the season.
It was Calvin’s first win of the season. The Knights are 1-3 overall.
Hope opened the scoring in the 15th minute when junior Gavin Midlam of East Lansing (East Lansing HS) headed in a throw-in from senior Grant Neil of Holland (West Ottawa HS). It was Midlam’s third goal of the season and Neil’s third assist
The Knights, however, answered 1 minute, 15 seconds later on Travis Vegter’s sixth goal of the season. It was all Calvin from there.
First goals of the season from three different players, including Zach Willis and Stephan Hooker in the first half, paved the way for the Knights.
Hope entered the match ranked eighth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire Division III poll and 20th in the d3soccer.com poll.
The match was part of a “Night Of Nets at Calvin and helped pay for 500 malaria-prevention nets that will be sent to Africa.
