HOPKINSON’S THREE GOALS LEAD ODU OVER VMI, 5-0
NORFOLK, VA—Old Dominion University senior forward Tim Hopkinson (Nottingham, England) scored the hat trick with three goals to lead the Soccer Monarchs to a 5-0 victory over the Keydets of VMI Friday evening at the ODU Soccer Complex. The three goals in one match was Hopkinson’s second of his career. ODU improves to 3-2.
Hopkinson put the Monarchs on the board first at the 39:32 mark on an assist from freshman Jesse Miralrio (Arlington, TX.). In the second half, Hopkinson headed in a pass from sophomore Michael Nelson (Austin, TX.) and then added his third of the match on an assist from freshman Cole Stringer (Keller, TX.).
Last year, Hopkins scored three goals in a match against Seton Hal, and now has a team best six goals and 13 total points thus far this season.
ODU’s fourth goal came from senior defender Jason Gaylord (Kendall, NY.) off Geoffrey Hill’s (Frisco, TX.) assist from a corner kick. Hill then scored his first goal of the season in the final two minutes of the match off a free kick to complete ODU’s scoring.
ODU outshot the Keydets, 32-6 overall and 15-1 in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Sean Stowe (Midlothian, VA.) and sophomore Connor Miller (Salisbury, NC.) shared the shutout for the Monarchs. VMI’s Zack Kaplan had nine saves on the night for VMI.
