Houle Nets Game-Winner in 1-0 Win Over Maine
STORRS, Conn.- The Connecticut women’s soccer team earned its third consecutive shutout victory following a game-winner by junior Riley Houle in UConn’s 1-0 victory over Maine on Friday evening. The Huskies defense continued to shut down its opponent limiting the Black Bears to only two shots on the night and not allowing a goal.
UConn’s goalkeeper Emily Armstrong (Collegeville, Pa.) improved to 3-2 on the season and tallied her third career shutout. The freshman goalie made one save.
Houle (Columbia, Conn.) gave the Huskies a 1-0 advantage 9:39 minutes into Friday’s game scoring from 10 yards out on the right side of the box. Houle, notching her second career game-winner, leads the Huskies with seven points after three goals and one assist on the season.
The Huskies dominated control of the ball at Morrone Stadium on Friday with Connecticut taking aim 23 times, including 10 shots on goal. Maine’s keeper Lauren Swant made nine saves on the evening.
Maine’s best chance to score came with 37 minutes remaining in regulation when Eve L’Abbe drilled a shot from 40 yards out hitting the crossbar and bouncing out of bounds. Redshirt freshman defender Gabriella Cuevas robbed the Black Bears of a chance on goal when Noelle Leon-Palmer was charging the net and Cuevas rushed from behind and made the sliding block.
Connecticut wraps up its four-game homestand on Sunday when they face Syracuse at 1 p.m. Tickets for the contest are still available. For fans unable to attend Morrone Stadium, the game will be streamed live on HuskyVision and broadcasted on WHUS.
