HPU earns 2-1 win over UNC Asheville
• Freshman Meredith Dunker and sophomore Jenny Marshall both scored in the win for High Point.
• The Panthers held a 20-4 edge in shots and put 11 shots on target.
• High Point improves to 3-2-1 in the Big South with the win.
HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 home win over UNC Asheville in Big South action on Wednesday night at Vert Stadium. The win was HPU's third in conference play this season.
"I am very happy for the girls, I thought they worked extremely hard tonight," head coach Marty Beall said. "We had 28 players get into the game and I like the fact that we were able to get them quality minutes against a tough opponent. Our pressure was fantastic and our possession was good throughout the match. Offensively, we created a bunch of good chances and were able to finish a couple of them."
The Panthers improve to 6-4-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the Big South with Wednesday's win. UNC Asheville drops to 8-7-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the Big South.
Freshman Meredith Dunker gave High Point a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute with her first collegiate goal. Dunker beat the Asheville keeper to a loose ball in the box and chipped a shot over her into the net for the go-ahead goal.
The Panthers doubled their lead in the 54th minute when a goal by sophomore Jenny Marshall put HPU ahead, 2-0. Junior Colleen Deardoff was played in on the right flank and delivered a cross into the box where freshmanPaige Rombach headed the ball down to Marshall. The sophomore settled the ball and slotted a shot just inside the left post from 10-yards out.
Asheville got a goal back in the 63rd minute with a headed score from Emma Houser. The Bulldogs earned a corner kick and Amanda Dailor delivered a dangerous ball into the box. Houser got her head on the ball six-yards from goal and delivered it into the net to make the score 2-1.
HPU finished with a 20-4 edge in shots and a 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. UNC Asheville had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks for the match.
Freshman Alex Persiani played the second half and made one save to improve to 2-1-1 on the season. Freshman Jordan Beets played the first half for HPU and made one save while holding the Bulldogs scoreless. Heather Muller made nine saves for UNC Asheville but dropped to 6-7-1 on the season.
High Point returns to the road this weekend when the team travels to Radford, Virginia to take on the Highlanders of Radford University. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
