HPU rolls to a 6-1 win over Presbyterian
HIGH POINT, N.C. - The High Point University men's soccer team scored a season-high six goals in a 6-1 win over Presbyterian College on Wednesday night at Vert Stadium. Senior Adam Sewell finished with a goal and two assists for the Panthers on senior night.
"I am really proud of how the team played tonight," head coach Dustin Fonder said. "It was senior night tonight and they weren't going to let Adam Sewell, our lone senior, lose. He embodies so much of what our program stands for and we wanted to send him off the right way. This group is extremely focused and determined to finish the season strong. To win on our home field the way we did tonight builds confidence going into the weekend."
Six different HPU players scored a goal in the win over the Blue Hose and eight difference players picked up at least one point. Sewell finished with a career-high four points on his senior night with a goal and a career-high two assists. Nyepon had three points on a goal and an assist on the night.
High Point jumped ahead in the fifth minute of play when Nyepon scored his 11th goal of the season off a pass from Sewell. The senior found space on the left side and delivered a line drive pass into the box. Nyepon took the ball out of the air with a left-footed shot into the net for the goal.
The score remained 1-0 until the 55th minute when the Panthers doubled their lead on a goal by freshman Chris Ramsell. The freshman was played in behind the Blue Hose' back line by Sewell and hit a curling shot from the top of the PC penalty area that tucked just inside the left post.
Just two minutes later HPU found the back of the net again on sophomore Ben Burdon's first goal of the season, making the score 3-0. Sophomore Adam Storm hit a cross into the box that was partially cleared by the Presbyterian defense. Burdon collected the loose ball in the box and took a quick shot for the score.
Sophomore Erien Campbell scored his fifth goal of the season in the 63rd minute as the Panthers continued to extend their lead to 4-0. Campbell was slipped in behind the defense by Nyepon and beat the keeper with a low ball to the right.
Sewell concluded his senior night in style with his third goal of the season, making the score 5-0 in the 74th minute. HPU earned a free kick and Yearwood delivered a low cross to the near post. Sewell dove down and headed the ball into the net.
Presbyterian College got a goal back in the 81st minute on a free kick by Josh Carter. The Blue Hose earned a foul at the edge of the box and Carter hit a low shot around the wall and just inside the left post.
Junior Dom de Aragao answered right back one minute later with his first HPU goal to make the score 6-1. Freshman Matt Gweh dribbled around a defender and got to the end line before dropping a pass off to de Aragao. The midfielder took one touch to settle the ball before hitting a shot back to the right.
High Point finished the game with a 21-11 advantage in shots, putting 11 shots on frame in the contest. Nyepon and redshirt-freshman Pat Shelton each had four shots in the game to pace HPU.
Redshirt-sophomore Kody Palmer made two saves and earned the win in goal for High Point. Tanner Osborne took the loss for Presbyterian College after entering the game at halftime. Osborne surrendered five second half goals while making two saves for PC.
The win improves HPU to 7-7-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the Big South this season. Presbyterian College falls to 3-14-0 overall and 1-8-0 in conference action with the loss.
