NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Despite having an 18-8 shot advantage, the Iona College women’s soccer team fell at home Friday afternoon to Manhattan, 3-0. FreshmanAmber Crispin had seven shots and junior Charlotte Stuart fired off five, but the Jaspers scored a trio of goals in the first half and then hung on to hand the Maroon & Gold the loss.
Senior Erica Modena scored her third goal of the season for Manhattan in the 13th minute. She dribbled around the Iona defense, deked junior goalie Tiffany Martinez, and placed a right-footed kick into the net.
Seven minutes later, Manhattan drew a foul in the box, leading to a penalty kick chance for freshman Arianna Montefusco. The rookie buried the attempt in the right side, giving the Jaspers a 2-0 lead 20 minutes into the game.
Iona mustered offensive pressure for the majority of the latter portion of the first half, but a late goal from Jaspers put the Maroon & Gold in a 3-0 hole. Senior Jenny Bitzer took a pass that deflected off junior Dylan Burns in the box and snuck a shot pass a diving save attempt by Martinez.
With a three goal cushion, Manhattan hunkered down and attempted just one shot in the second half. Crispin had three shots in the second, including a pair of quick dangerous chances in the 61st and 63rd minute. Stuart had all three of her shots on goal in the second half.
Martinez made two saves in net for Iona. Freshman Olivia Printy made seven saves for Manhattan.
Iona returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 when Fairfield comes to Iona for a 1:00 PM kickoff.
