Iona Stymies Saints on Senior Day
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Iona attempted just three shots but scored on two of their targets as the Gaels spoiled Siena Soccer’s Senior Day 2-0 at Siena Turf Field. The Saints dominated possession from start to finish in holding a commanding 17-3 advantage in shots and a 9-0 margin in corners.
Siena (4-9-2, 3-4) held the potent Iona (8-6-1, 4-3) offense in check while creating numerous scoring opportunities of their own, but it was the Gaels who were able to take advantage of their limited chances.
In the 16th minute, Marcos Nunez passed from the left to to the top of the box to Luis Mendoza who fired home a shot just under the crossbar. In the 56th minute, on Iona’s next shot attempt, the Gaels got some insurance when Nunez fed Daniel Ocana Garcia who finished a two-on-one break.
Siena put six of its shots on goal, including a 73rd minute penalty kick by sophomore striker Alexander Tejera, but couldn’t solve Iona goalkeeper Julian Petrello who recorded the clean sheet.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gianni Carillo made one save for the Saints in another physical affair between the MAAC rivals which resulted in 36 combined fouls and six yellow cards.
The Saints will look to bounce back Wednesday when they face Marist for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Poughkeepsie.
