JMU Edges ODU, 3-2
HARRISONBURG, Va. - Seventh ranked Old Dominion scored two second half goals but came up short in its comeback attempt, falling 3-2 at No. 17 James Madison Wednesday night in a battle of CAA leaders. The loss ended ODU's seven-game winning streak.
James Madison (12-2-1/8-1) got on the board first in the 34th minute when Paul Wyatt gathered the ball at midfield and dribbled past the defense and put in a shot to the right side of the net.
ODU (11-3/7-2) got the equalizer in the 56th minute. Alex Vaughan (Chesapeake, Va.) fired a free kick from 35 yards out from the right side that the JMU keeper mishandled and Tommy Webb (Auckland, NZ) was there to clean it up to tie the score at one.
JMU went ahead in the 65th minute when Wyatt sent a pass that was deflected but went right to Patrick Innes who sent a shot just inside the right post for a 2-1 JMU lead.
James Madison increased its lead to 3-1 in the 77th minute on a goal from Jonathan Barden. Wyatt dribbled down the left side and sent a cross pass back into the middle to Barden for the goal.
ODU made it a one goal game again with a penalty kick goal from Jason Gaylord (Kendall, NY.) in the 80th minute. Tim Hopkinson (Nottingham, England) was taken down in the box to earn the penalty kick.
JMU had the first chance of the game in the 10th minute when Patrick Innes sent in a free kick from midfield, the ball was kicked around in front to Jimmy Spellman who sent a shot off the cross bar.
Old Dominion's best chance of the first half came in the 36th minute when Yannick Smith sent a cross pass to Gideon Asante but his shot sailed just over the goal.

The Dukes had a chance with seven minutes left in the first half as Boyd Reid created space just outside the box on the right side but Victor Francoz came up with a big kick save to keep the score at 1-0.
Francoz came up big just a few minutes later as Jamal Umar got a cross from the right but the ODU keeper was there for the save. Francoz came up with five saves on the night. The Dukes outshot the Monarchs, 20-5.
Monarchs travel to Boston for a Saturday night match at Northeastern.
