Kelly and Maybin Connect to Help RU Put CSUP Under for First RMAC Win of 2013
PUEBLO, Colo.: Regis University men's soccer (2-0, 1-0) headed down to Pueblo, Colo. this Friday night to take on the ThunderWolves of Colorado State-Pueblo for their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the 2013 season.
With the Pueblo fans showing their enthusiasm and excitement, RU gained the first advantage of the match in the eighth minute of play.
The play started with a corner kick that was first cleared by a CSUP defender and picked up by junior Martin Maybin. Maybin then volleyed over to senior Mark Kellywho redirected the ball past the ThunderWolves' keeper.
Pueblo evened the score in the 30th minute off a corner of their own, but the Rangers would grab the lead one second before the first half ends to start the second 2-1 over their opposition.
Kelly picked up the ball at midfield after Regis cleared a free kick attempt toward the goal and sent a left-foot pass up to Maybin who received the ball just past midfield with 24 seconds on the clock.
He dribbled past the remaining T-Wolves defense toward the goal and put a left-footer through to the near corner for the goal as the horn rang out to signal the end of the half.
Kelly, Maybin and the Rangers were not done however and would score again in the 82nd minute of play. Freshman defender Joseph Terry played the ball into Maybin who flipped the ball on to Kelly. The senior forward then went one-on-one with the opposition's goalie, scoring to the left side of the net.
Regis put up 11 shots to Pueblo's 10, while putting four on goal.
Sophomore goalie Christian Nicolosi had three saves on the night, all in the first half as the Ranger defense buckled down and allowed their opponents only four shots in the second half, none of which challenged Nicolosi.
Regis will return home Sunday, September 22 at 3:30 p.m. to take on cross-town rivals Metropolitan State University of Denver.
