King drops heartbreaker to Mount Olive
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The King University men's soccer dropped a heartbreaker to Mount Olive in a weather delayed affair. On a 90th minute goal, the Tornado would see themselves drop their first Conference Carolinas match.
Mount Olive started their attack right from the opening whistle. In the ninth minute,Kari Sveinsson came up with a big save keeping the Trojans scoreless. Immediately after, the Trojans threatened again but a shot sailed high of the net.
King (5-5, 3-1) would finally take control in the 23rd minute when Eli Carrascodelivered. Sveinnsson threw the ball to Ryan Murphy who then sent the ball to Carrasco. He then beat the keeper making the score King 1, Mount Olive 0. Just two minutes later, King added another making the score King 2, Mount Olive 0. Murphy collected a long ball and sent a one-timer past the Trojan keeper Nick Bensdorf.
Mount Olive came right back down the field and cut the lead in half a minute later. Cooper Gaypia took a throw in from Sean Locket. Gaypia then took one touch and sent the ball past Sveinnsson making the score 2-1, Tornado still leading.
At the half, King was outshot 9-4 but was able to keep Mount Olive (3-7-2, 1-4) from getting another, keeping the score at 2-1.
The Tornado opened the half up fast when Carrasco hit a shot that was saved by the keeper giving King a corner kick. In the 56th and 57th minute, King would tally two corner kicks and off the second one, Chris Hicks sent a shot that was saved by the keeper. In the 60th minute, the Trojans added another, by way of penalty kick making the score 2-2. Shortly after Mount Olive tying the game, it went under a weather delay due to lightning.
After the delay, King came out attacking. Murphy sailed a shot high of the net followed by a Luis Calderon shot that was saved by the Trojans keeper. In the 73rd minute, Carrasco delivered a shot that ricocheted off the post. He followed with another shot immediately after, the keeper coming up with another save.
In the 90th minute things would not go King's way as Mount Olive scored the game winning goal on a service into the box, beating the Tornado keeper Cameron Sauro. The final whistle blew and King was defeated by Mount Olive, a heartbreaking loss.
Mount Olive tallied 14 shots to King's 13 and the Trojans had five corner kicks to King's three. Sveinsson and Sauro combined for six saves.
Up next, King will travel to Gaffney, S.C. to take on Limestone College on October 15 at 7:30 p.m.
