Krikorian Earns Win No. 200 At FSU
GREENSBORO, N.C. – In just his 11th season at the helm of the Florida State soccer program, head coach Mark Krikorian earned win No. 200 on Thursday night with a 6-0 victory at UNC Greensboro. The No. 2 Seminoles (7-1-0) registered four goals and two assists from freshmen against the Spartans (2-6-1) as they recorded their third straight shutout.
“It was a good, solid performance start to finish,” said Krikorian. “Solid performances from a lot of players and nice to see some different kids get on the scoresheet. I thought we also did a good job of limiting chances at our goal.”
The game was a back and forth battle early in the first half. The Seminoles had a few quality chances including a takeaway by freshman Elin Jensen in the 12th minute but her shot sailed over the goal.
Holly Fritz nearly had the game’s first goal in the 22nd minute, lining a shot from the right side that was about to head under the crossbar but UNCG goalkeeper Chloe Buehler punched the ball away for an FSU corner.
UNC Greensboro had a quality scoring chance in the 32nd minute, lifting a ball behind the FSU defense to Chesney White who took a hard shot from 15 yards that saved by Cassie Miller to keep the game scoreless.
The Noles continued to pressure UNCG as the game neared halftime and opened the scoring with a goal by Michaela Hahn at 37:21. The senior midfielder received a pass from Kirsten Crowley near midfield and carried it into the offensive third. She ripped a shot from about 25 yards that went into the upper corner and gave Florida State a 1-0 lead.
Kaycie Tillman gave FSU a 2-0 advantage in the final minute of the half, finding the back of the net at 44:28 on the clock. Carson Pickett got the play started with a nice pass into Cheyna Williams at the top of the box. The senior forward dribbled to the end line and around a defender to create space for a cross. Her ball found Tillman at the top of the six-yard box and the freshman midfielder finished it into the back of the net.
The second half was all Florida State, as the Seminoles scored four goals and outshot the Spartans 10-1 over the final 45 minutes.
Freshman Dallas Dorosy made it 3-0 in the 69th minute with a header from 10 yards off a cross from Olivia Bergau. Fritz fed the ball down the right side and Bergau took it around the UNCG defender and played a great ball for Dorosy to redirect into the net for her first career goal.
Ari Hudson added to the scoreboard less than four minutes later, putting home a ball from about 15 yards at 72:23 after Jensen took a ball deep into the box and dropped it back to Hudson. It was Hudson’s first goal of the season and second of the sophomore’s career.
Jensen continued her offensive contributions, scoring the final two goals of the game for the Seminoles. The Reykjavik, Iceland, native scored on a shot from the top of the box at 79:49 off a long ball in by Pickett. She turned around the defender and placed a great shot to beat the keeper and make it 5-0 Florida State.
The freshman pushed it up to 6-0 with a goal in the 88th minute after she collected a loose ball about 25 yards out and fired a low shot that skipped past the goalkeeper for her second goal of the night.
“I am really happy that we came here and had a great performance – scoring six goals and we didn’t concede any,” said Jensen. “I am happy that I scored two, but it was just a great team performance tonight.”
In all, four goals and two assists tonight were recorded by freshmen. Seven of the eight freshmen on the team have scored at least one point this season, with Megan Connolly leading the team with 10 points so far in 2015.
“We knew we had a talented group of young kids,” added Krikorian. “They’ve continued to mature and develop into good players and will continue to help us.”
The Seminoles next take the pitch on Sunday, September 20 as they open ACC play at No. 22 Duke. The match will begin at 1 p.m. and will be streamed online via the Blue Devil Network. Ticket information is available at Goduke.com and live stats will be available on Seminoles.com.
