Lamar hosts Texas Southern on Friday
Sept. 12, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's soccer team continues its homestand when it hosts Texas Southern in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. Friday.
Lamar (2-4-1) is 1-0-1 on the homestand, claiming a 5-1 win over Prairie View A&M and battling to a 1-1 tie with Houston Baptist.
"We're playing well. Things are running smooth," Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. "I'm very happy with the practices we had this week."
Sophomore Kristin Bos leads the Lady Cardinals in scoring with five goals and 10 points, putting her fourth in the Southland Conference in both categories. Bos leads the conference with 38 shots. Sophomore Kimmy Albeno is second on the team in scoring with seven points, and is tied for third in the conference with three assists.
Freshman goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot is expected to make her third consecutive start. The Beaumont native brings a 1.69 goals-against average and .758 save percentage into the game.
"Our underclassmen have stepped it up," Cervantes said. "We have a good nucleus for the future."
Texas Southern (1-6), a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, is 0-4 against Southland Conference teams this season. The Lady Tigers' only win was a 2-1 victory over Huston-Tillotson.
Lamar leads the overall series 2-0. The Lady Cardinals set school records for goals in a game and largest margin of victory with an 11-0 home win over Texas Southern last season.
"I'm sure Texas Southern remembers that and is upset about that," Cervantes said. "We just have to go out and play our game. We can't worry about our opponent. We just have to do our job."
Lamar wraps up the homestand when it hosts Alcorn State at 7 p.m. Sept. 19, a game that was added to the schedule this week.
