Lamar stunned by HBU in OT
BEAUMONT, Texas – Molly Missimer scored with nine seconds remaining in the first overtime to lift visiting Houston Baptist to a 1-0 victory over Lamar in a Southland Conference women’s soccer game Monday night.
Missimer fired a blast into the top right corner of the net that barely eluded the reach of Lamar goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot, who made 10 saves in the game.
Lamar (3-7-1 overall, 0-3-1 Southland) had several chances to score, but the Cardinals were thwarted by Patty Walrath, who made nine saves for Houston Baptist (2-7-1, 1-2-0). Lamar saw its winless streak extended to six games (0-5-1). The Cardinals have been held scoreless for the last 476 minutes, 41 seconds.
“This is a tough loss,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “We had our chances, but that’s what happens when you don’t score. You let the other team hang around, and it cost us.”
Lamar outshot the Huskies 10-4 in the first half, controlling play for much of the opening stanza, but couldn’t find a way to beat Walrath. Kristin Bos led Lamar with five shots and four shots on goal.
Lamar returns to action on the weekend when it opens a three-game Southland Conference road swing. The Cardinals are at Nicholls at 4 p.m. Friday and Southeastern Louisiana at 1 p.m. Sunday. Lamar visits Sam Houston State on Oct. 11 before hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Oct. 13.
“We have to regroup,” Cervantes said. “We still have plenty of soccer to play.”
