Last Second Goal Lifts Spartans over Redhawks, 2-1
With 15 seconds left in regulation, San Jose State's Steve Sanchez followed through on a deflected shot to guide the visiting Spartans to a 2-1 victory over the Seattle University men's soccer team Friday afternoon at Championship Field.
"It was a good performance in the first half, (we) had three or four good chances and didn't score. In the second half (San Jose State) got a penalty kick off (and) it was disappointing. I thought it was a good response by the guys to come back and get a goal ... In the end of the game, it was just a lapse. Give them credit; their goalkeeper had a tremendous game and they took their chances at the end," said head coach Brad Agoos.
After 45 scoreless minutes, where the Redhawks outshot the Spartans 8-5, SJSU got on the board immediately to open second half action. A San Jose State player got tangled up in the box and a foul was called on Seattle U. Diego Ochoa took the penalty kick for the Spartans and handed them a 1-0 advantage at 47:30.
SU responded well and immediately pushed the pace of play. Elliot Richards (Shoreline, Wash.) andBrandon Hamer (Carmichael, Calif.) went on to fire off consecutive shots on frame, but their attempts were unsuccessful.
At the 53:09-minute mark, a San Jose State player was called for a handball in the box, setting up the game's second penalty kick. Senior Richards took the kick and evened the game 1-1. The Redhawks are a perfect 3-for-3 in penalty kick opportunities this season.
Following the game-evening goal, both sides worked to maintain possession. The Redhawks again made several strong runs down the field, but struggled to get off solid goal scoring opportunities.
In a final run down the field, as the clock ticked towards the end of regulation, the Spartans made the most of their offensive possession. Roberto Casteneda sent in a shot in the middle that was blocked and Sanchez was there to follow through on the deflection to score the game-winner at the 89:45-minute mark.
Friday's match marked the third consecutive game the Redhawks have fallen by a 2-1 decision. The game-winner in each match has been scored in the final minutes of regulation or in overtime.
For SU, junior transfer Marshall Reese (Portland, Ore.) earned his first career start in goal. He played all 90 minutes and tallied a pair of saves.
In the game, SU outshot SJSU 21-11, holding a 9-4 on target advantage.
Seattle U (1-8-2, 0-4 MPSF) will look to get back on track on Sunday, Oct. 16, as they host Sacramento State at 1 p.m. Prior to kickoff, fans are invited to the second annual SU REDOUT Block Party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
