Late Surge Sends Raiders Over Ramblers, 2-1
Oct. 15, 2011
DAYTON, Ohio – After a scoreless first half and a late offensive surge from both teams, Loyola dropped tonight’s match-up against Wright State, 2-1. With the loss, the Ramblers fall to 0-3-2 in the Horizon League while the Raiders improve to 2-2-1 in conference play.
Loyola had a tough time controlling Wright State’s I’esha King, who scored both goals for the Raiders. King broke away from the Rambler defense in the 52nd minute to net the game-winner from inside the box. Nearly 20 minutes later, King launched a second attempt that deflected off of a defender and into the goal.
After being awarded a penalty kick at the 78:09 minute mark, Ana Claudia Michelini scored her fourth goal of the season to cut Wright State’s lead in half but the Ramblers were unable to find the net again before time ran out, resulting in the loss.
Michelini finished with two total shots in the match while Lauren Ostarello led the team in their offensive effort with three shots on goal. Kristin Papierski also finished strong, adding three shots to the team total. Loyola held the 13-12 advantage in shots and the two squads split-even with four corner kicks apiece.
Monica Gonyo served as the Rambler’s keeper and fell to 4-6-2 with the loss, finishing with two saves on the night.
The Ramblers will return home for a mid-week contest on Oct. 19 where they will host powerhouse Milwaukee at Loyola Soccer Park. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. CST.
