BOSTON – The Lehigh men’s soccer team took first-place Boston University to overtime tied at 2-2 before sophomore Doyle Tuvesson scored the game-winner just 58 seconds into the extra frame to capture a 3-2 victory Saturday night. The Mountain Hawks hand the Terriers their first league loss of the season and pick up three big points in the Patriot League standings.

 

“This was a very good win for us on the road against the first place team,” said head coach Dean Koski. “I’m really happy for the team and proud of their effort. They responded well to giving up a late goal, came out in overtime with the right mentality and showed a high level of commitment.”

 

Lehigh moves its record to 3-3 in league play and 9-5-1 overall, while BU falls to 4-1-1 in the Patriot League and 10-5-1 overall. The win also marks the Mountain Hawks’ first-ever win over the Terriers.

 

“This win really speaks to the team’s current commitment and training as well as their trust in each other and the coaching staff,” said Koski. “The leadership of our seniors has been very good as of late and that really helps as we continue on in Patriot League play.” 

 

The teams exchanged shots early on in the game, with the first attempt on net coming in the 13th minute when Lehigh sophomore keeper Joe Bogan was able to make the save. The Mountain Hawks got off two more shots before senior Jamie Luchini capitalized in the 26th minute. The senior scored his seventh goal of the season off a rebound from six yards out and Tuvesson was credited with the assist as Lehigh took a 1-0 lead.

 

The Terriers were able to tie the score in the 42nd minute when a cross from T.J. Butzke found the head of a Lehigh defender and deflected into the back of the net as the own goal sent the game into halftime tied at 1-1.

 

The Terriers opened the second half with a corner kick and shot, but Lehigh immediately regained possession and began to threaten with three shots in the next three minutes, two of which were saved by BU keeper Matt Gilbert. Lehigh was able to take a lead once again in the 53rd minute when freshman Mark Forrest headed in a cross from classmate Alex Greene to put the Mountain Hawks ahead 2-1.

 

The teams exchanged shots for the next 25 minutes, with Bogan making a pair of big saves in net. The Terriers were once again able to find an equalizer late in the second half when Felix De Bona put one in the back of the net to knot the score at 2-2. The Mountain Hawks outshot BU 3-1 for the remainder of regulation, but the game was sent to overtime tied at two.

 

Tuvesson then scored the game-winner just 58 seconds into overtime when he took a pass about 35 yards out and worked his way through traffic in the box before firing the golden goal into the lower right-hand corner to secure the 3-2 overtime win for the Mountain Hawks.

 

Final shots stood 18-13 in favor of Lehigh, while the Mountain Hawks also controlled a 5-3 corner kick edge. Bogan finished with three saves compared to Gilbert’s five.

 

The Mountain Hawks return to action Wednesday when Lehigh hosts archrival Lafayette at the Ulrich Sports Complex at 7 p.m. Lehigh then remains home to welcome Bucknell for Senior Night Saturday.
