Long Island University recently announced the One LIU program, merging what has been known recently as LIU Brooklyn and LIU Post into a single Long Island University for athletics in time for next school year.

While the move will result in the creation of NCAA Division I football, men's lacrosse and wrestling programs at LIU, it almost means the loss of the university's NCAA Division II programs, such as men's and women's soccer.

The new Long Island University will keep its place in the NCAA Division I Northeast Conference for men's and women's soccer, but the Division II soccer programs that were part of the LIU Post campus will cease, according to the sports information department.

Players from LIU Post will be given a chance to earn walk-on spots on the LIU Division I team. As for the LIU Post coaching staff, their status is yet to be determined.

"There's going to be an attempt to merge staffs where that is possible," LIU Brooklyn SID Casey Snedecor told TDS.

LIU Brooklyn has been a member of the NCAA Division I NEC, while LIU Post, formerly C.W. Post, has been affiliated with the Eastern College Athletic Conference, East Coast Conference and Northeast-10 Conference as part of NCAA Division II. The merger, as explained by Snedecor, works this way: any NCAA sport at LIU Brooklyn will remain part of LIU's offering in the NEC. Any sport at Post that LIU-Brooklyn did not offer will transition to NCAA Division I as part of the new LIU. Any sport at Post that LIU Brooklyn already has will be disbanded.

The university is maintaining athletic facilities at both campuses, and all outdoor sports -- including soccer -- will be played at the LIU Post, while all indoor sports will reside at LIU Brooklyn for home contests, Snedecor said.

As part of the One LIU initiative, the university will develop a new nickname and mascot for the program, Snedecor added.
