Lobos Add Montreal Impact Academy GK
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s soccer program has announced an additional signing to its 2014 recruiting class. Goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu of Montreal, Quebec has signed a national letter of intent with New Mexico and will join the Lobos as a freshman for the 2014 season. Beaulieu is a member of the Montreal Impact’s Academy system, which makes him the fifth MLS Academy signee of UNM’s nine-member recruiting class.
“We are very excited to add Jason to our program,” said head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “He will add stability to our goalkeeping corps and has the ability and experience to compete for playing time. His addition will create a more competitive environment in our program, which is good for everyone.”
Beaulieu has spent the last three seasons with the Impact’s Academy system and was the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year for Montreal last season. The 6-foot-4-inch keeper posted eleven clean sheets with a 0.76 goals allowed average while helping the Impact reach the national Development Academy finals. He was invited to the Impact’s preseason camp earlier this year in Florida.
“Jason comes to New Mexico after three years in a professional environment with the Montreal Impact’s Academy team,” Fishbein noted. “He has played in pressure situations and knows what it takes to be competitive at this level. Jason is a young man who values his education and his decision to join the Lobo Soccer program will allow him to grow as a leader and a student while achieving his soccer goals.”
Beaulieu will become the second Canadian on the UNM roster joining midfielder Ben McKendry from Vancouver, British Columbia. He comes to Albuquerque from the Montreal Impact Academy system whose MLS team features former Lobo Blake Smith.
New Mexico will begin its spring schedule with a handful of exhibitions in New Mexico and Arizona over the upcoming weeks.
