Lone Goal Helps Bruins Upset Panthers
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Dennis Kluba's 40th-minute goal stood up as Belmont University upset the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team by a score of 1-0 at E.S. Rose Park.
The Panthers (3-6-2, 1-2-1 Horizon League) put up a barrage of offense against the Bruins (3-9-1, 1-3-1 Horizon League), only to come up short of an equalizer in a frustrating loss on the road Saturday evening.
Milwaukee dominated possession and chances in the first half, accumulating an impressive 9-2 total at one point. Freshman Peter Raymonds nearly got on the score sheet first, sending a shot off the cross bar from the top of the penalty area at the 9:03 mark of the day.
Belmont then changed the game on a corner kick, with Kluba heading in the set piece for his first goal of the year at the 39:20 mark. That was the only danger the Panthers allowed the first half, outside of an easy save by senior Agustin Rey in the 23rd minute.
The team made offensive substitutions with about 20 minutes to play and kept pushing, but the Belmont back line kept coming through, with goalkeeper Grayson Rector also adding a trio of saves. The last UWM chance nearly tied it as well, but Raymonds' header with just 25 seconds remaining was saved to ice the win for the home team.
Milwaukee paced the stat sheet with advantages of 15-11 in shots and 5-4 in corner kicks. Raymonds led the Panthers with a season-high five shots. Freshman Francesco Saporito was second with three.
The team will look to bounce back Wednesday, hosting Green Bay in the annual battle for the Chancellors Cup at Engelmann Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
