Longwood men fall at Liberty
September 30, 2009
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Longwood University men’s soccer team fell at Liberty University 2-0 on Tuesday night in Lynchburg. Freshman Josh Woodburn/Louisburg, N.C. (Franklinton) led the Lancers (1-6-2) with three shots, one on goal. Longwood returns home for the first time in eight matches on Saturday night when it faces the University of Richmond of the Atlantic 10 Conference at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.
The Lancers started the match erratically but settled down after 10 minutes and started to go to work. Longwood pressed the action and did not let up on the Flames, creating scoring opportunities but just missing.
Longwood had two shots early in the second half off a corner kick. Woodburn had his shot blocked but Chris Saul/Pasadena, Md. (Chesapeake) got the rebound and launched a shot that hit the crossbar. Disaster struck minutes later for Longwood when Joel Helmick/Springfield (W.T. Woodson) picked up a back pass from a teammate, resulting in a free kick outside the box. The Flames took the kick before Longwood was organized and scored in the 60th minute when Timothy Bullock found the net off the free kick by Juan Guzman to take a 1-0 lead. The Flames would add an insurance goal in the 67th minute on a penalty kick by Darren Amoo to go ahead 2-0.
“Once we got over the first 10 minutes we were fine,” said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. “Our guys ground down Liberty and worked to make good opportunities. If we had converted on a few of them then it would have been a different match. I’m proud of their hard work and if we maintain this standard of effort and finish opportunities then we will be ready to go in to Saturday’s match with Richmond.”
Saul had two shots with one on goal in the game while senior Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) had one shot on goal. Helmick had four saves and gave up two goals. Amoo led Liberty with five shots, three of them on goal and Timothy Bullock had three shots all of them on goal. Madero had three saves on the night for the Flames.
Longwood had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks but Liberty outshot the Lancers 18-9.
