Longwood Suffers 4-0 Setback against Coastal
FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University men’s soccer team faced a 4-0 setback against Big South Conference opponent No. 21 Coastal Carolina University (14-4, 9-1) in the squad’s regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon in Farmville. Redshirt-senior Patrick McDaniel/Midlothian was recognized in a special Senior Day pregame ceremony. Freshmen goalkeeper Carlos Canas/Manassas tallied six saves in the outing, while three different Lancers registered one shot apiece. Longwood (7-8-3, 6-3-1) will make its first ever appearance in the Big South Men’s Soccer Championship, hosting a quarterfinal match against an opponent yet to be determined, on Tuesday, November 12 at 6 p.m. at the Athletics Complex.
“Coastal is the regular-season championship for a reason,” said head coach Jon Atkinson. “They are a quality team. I thought we did a decent job in the first half, and it was unfortunate the timing of the first goal, as Coastal gained confidence and was able to generate rhythm from then. No matter what today’s result, the most important point is we had a fantastic year and are excited to be hosting on Tuesday for the opening round of the Big South Tournament.”
The Chanticleers earned a corner kick less than two minutes into play, as Uchenna Uzo got a head on the ball, but his attempt sailed high. Seven minutes later, Coastal threatened again, this time with a hard shot from the top of the box by Sergio Camargo that was batted away by a diving Canas. Longwood’s first chance of the day came off of a set piece, as freshman Vaughn Fowler/Chester inserted to sophomore Will Lambert/Charlottesville for a strike that was blocked by a defender. On the team’s next time down the field, sophomore Philip van Berkom/Zetten, the Netherlands drilled a high shot up and over the road behind the complex. Coastal came close to taking a lead when Pedro Ribeiro dribbled in the box alone and took a close-range chip shot that Canas was a able to just get a hand on before falling down. The Chants would break the game open on their next chance in the 39th minute, however, as Justin White sent a long cross from the right side to Ricky Garbanzo near the left post for a one-timer behind Canas, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
Coming out of the break, Coastal sent a long ball up to Camargo near the left post for a shot from close range that was stopped by Canas. The Chants were able to extend their margin in the 55th minute on a set piece played in by Justin Portillo that skidded off the top of Ribeiro’s head and into the net just under crossbar. Canas came up with a great save just minutes later on a header by Colin Marz to maintain the two-goal differential. After a nearly 25-minute lull without a shot from either side, Coastal struck twice more in the final seven minutes when Camargo and Jakub Stourac each found the back of the net, sealing the 4-0 decision for the visitors.
Saturday’s match marked just the third meeting ever between Longwood and Coastal in the sport of men’s soccer
