Loyola (MD) men lose to Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Loyola University Maryland men’s soccer team came up short to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Iona in the Greyhounds’ regular season finale on Sunday after the Gaels scored twice in the first half, 2-0.
Loyola (9-6-2, 5-3-1 in MAAC) will enter next week’s 2010 Chick-fil-A MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship at Ridley Athletic Complex as the fourth seed and face top-seeded Saint Peter’s in the tournament’s second semifinal game on Friday at 6 p.m. Iona (8-8-1, 6-3 MAAC) clinches the third seed with the day’s win and will play Siena on Friday at 3 p.m.
Iona jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals from Julian Garjales in the 30th minute and Franklin Castellanos in the 35th. Castellanos crossed in a free kick to the left corner for Garjales on Iona’s first goal before he knocked in a free kick himself to put the Gaels ahead going into halftime, 2-0.
Alex Garcev tried to net one for the Greyhounds with two chances in the 26th minute, but Iona goalkeeper Jesse Fullerton made consecutive saves on both shots to maintain the shutout.
Zach Tweddell followed up with another shot on goal in the 29th minute but was also stopped.
Loyola goalkeeper Zach Kane made his first appearance of the season when he entered the game in the 60th minute. Kane saw no shots and did not allow a goal in 30:51 of play.
Loyola will host the 2010 Chick-fil-A MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship on Friday, November 12 and Sunday, November 14. The two semifinal games will be played on Friday, November 12 at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. The two semifinal winners will play in the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
