LSU Sneaks By Ladyjacks With Late Goal
BATON ROUGE, LA – A goal by Fernanda Pina in the 78th minute proved to be the game-winner in LSU’s 2-1 victory over the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Tuesday evening. The match was originally scheduled to take place last Friday but was rescheduled to Hurricane Isaac.
The contest was also the fifth and final game of a five-game road trip for the Ladyjacks that stretched from Aug. 19-Sept. 4. Both of SFA’s losses have now been of the one-goal variety to each LSU and Texas Tech.
"We played well tonight and put ourselves in a position to win the game," SFA head coach Tony Amato said. "We were able to put them under pressure going forward and created some good scoring chances. LSU found a way to score the second goal and that was the difference in the match. We can take some real positives from the game and build off that for Friday."
SFA (4-2) actually outshot LSU (3-1-1) 12-9 and both teams tied in shots on goal 3-3. However, two of those SOG found the back of the net and are the most goals the Ladyjacks have allowed in a game this season.
Pina’s goal in the 78th minute came with the game tied 1-1 on an assist from Heather Magee and Victoria Sample.
SFA had jumped out in front early in the 9th minute of the first half when Chelsea Raymond scored her fifth goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Zuri Prince. The Ladyjacks used that 1-0 lead to their advantage for the majority of the opening half until LSU’s Kaley Blades scored the equalizer in the 33rd minute to tie the game 1-1 on her second goal of the season.
Ladyjacks goalkeeper Lacey Lee saw her individual record fall to 3-2, allowing two goals while collecting a save. LSU keeper Megan Kinneman earned the victory for the Tigers while snagging two saves.
The Ladyjacks will finally return home this Friday when they host Rice at 7 p.m. at the SFA Soccer Field on “Purple Out” night.
