Makowski, Williams new Colby assistants
WATERVILLE, Maine --- A former professional soccer goalkeeper who was also an NCAA Division I assistant coach and a former MVP on the Division I Syracuse University soccer team are joining Colby College’s men’s soccer coaching staff this fall under head coach Ewan Seabrook.
Chris Makowski was a four-year player on defense for the Syracuse Orange, and Matt Williams played goalkeeper for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats before a pro career in goal for the United Soccer League’s Dayton (Ohio) Dutch Lions from 2012 through 2014. Williams will coach Colby’s goalies.
Makowski, a 2015 graduate of Syracuse, was a team MVP as a sophomore after helping lead the Orangemen to a 14-6-1 record. He played more minutes than any of his teammates at Syracuse during the 2012 and 2013 seasons and was a co-captain in 2013. Makowski earned his bachelor’s degree from Syracuse’s School of Education and was a team representative in the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Williams was an assistant coach last year at Wright State University while playing for the Dayton pro team. He was the USL’s goalkeeper of the week 10 times and was the league leader in saves two years in a row.
As a student at the University of Cincinnati Williams earned Big East All-Conference Third Team honors in 2010 after posting nine shutouts and playing every minute in net for the Bearcats. He also was on the Big East All-Academic Team during his time at Cincinnati. He had 20 shutouts in his Bearcat career.
Before college Williams was an all-state goalkeeper at Cheverus High School in Portland, Maine, posting a 0.47 goals against average as a senior. He was an assistant coach at Cheverus in 2011 and 2012.
