McGuiness Provides Heroics In Victory
BALTIMORE, Md. – Game-winning goals are nothing new for University of Scranton senior midfielder Bill McGuiness (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), who entered play on Saturday with eight game-winners, including one in overtime last year against Drew University. Now, he has one more memorable goal to add to the list.
McGuiness scored late in the second overtime when his shot from 15 yards out snuck past the goalkeeper to give the Royals a 2-1 victory over Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field on Saturday.
The goal, which came in the 108th minute and gave Scranton its first win against Johns Hopkins in five tries, was the fifth of the season and the second game-winner for McGuiness. He now has 21 career goals and 55 career points, which are 22nd all-time at Scranton. McGuiness has also scored in each of the Royals’ last four matches and has scored five of their last seven goals.
Junior midfielder Rich Loeffler (Matawan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) was credited with an assist on the play, and finished the day with two assists.
After the teams were scoreless at halftime, Scranton (3-0-2) held a brief lead when sophomore forward Nick Paganelli (Ossining, N.Y./Fordham Preparatory) blasted home a shot from 13 yards out off an assist from Loeffler at the 72:34 mark.
The lead was short, however, as Johns Hopkins (2-2-1) answered right back on a goal from freshman midfielder David Adejunmobi (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton) just 46 seconds later.
Scranton held an 18-11 advantage in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Eric Hintz (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) made two saves for the Royals, both in the second half, to pick up his third win of the season.
The Royals are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 17, when they travel to Dallas, Pa. to take on Misericordia at 7 p.m.
