Men's Soccer Defeats Howard 3-0
Brooklyn, New York---Behind three second half goals, the St. Francis College men’s soccer team earned their second win of the season, defeating the Howard University Bison, 3-0, at the Aviator Sports and Recreation Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the start of this afternoon’s contest, past soccer alumni took to the field and donned the old pads and cleats and played to a five-five draw (the contest ended in penalty kicks with each team scoring twice).
Both teams entered the intermission tied at zero, with the Terriers taking nine shots while only recording two shots on goal.
The Terriers struck first in the 61st minute off the foot of senior midfielder Adam Maabdi. Forward Kevin Correa received the pass from teammate Richie Arkoi on the right side of the box with Correa blasting the shot on goal. He was denied by Howard’s Eric Hamilton and the ball found the native of Lille, France, who was able to swoop in uncontested and give the Terriers the early lead.
For Maabdi, it is his second goal of the season. For Correa and Arkoi, it was their first assist, respectively.
St. Francis struck again in the 72nd minute as junior midfielder John Johansson netted his second of the season in similar fashion. Fellow classmate forward Gabriel Bagot was able to create space between he and his defender. The Nevers, France native was able to launch a shot on goal that was stopped by Hamilton. Johansson, similar to the Maabdi goal, was able to rebound the loose ball and find the net to extend the Terrier lead to two.
For junior tri-captain, it is his second goal of the season while Bagot picked up his first assist of the season.
The Terriers completed the hat-trick as Correa netted his team-leading third goal of the season in the 74th minute. Correa was able to convert from twenty yards out on a chip shot that went past the outstretch reach of Hamilton.
For the contest, St. Francis finished the game with 15 shots, tying their season-high (set back against Saint Joseph’s) while holding the Bison to just three total shots.
Senior goalkeeper Tyler Clarhaut picked up his first shutout of the season (his seventh overall as a Terrier). His counterpart Eric Hamilton finished the contest with four saves.
The Terriers head to Lawrenceville, New Jersey on Monday, September 17th as they tangle with Rider University of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Kick-off is slated for 4:00 PM
