Men's Soccer Edged 1-0 By #5 UConn
Storrs, Connecticut---The St. Francis Brooklyn men's soccer team fell to the #5 ranked University of Connecticut Huskies, 1-0, on Friday evening. It was the season opener for both teams.
Over the first twenty minutes, the Terriers played even with the Huskies, matching up position-by-position. St. Francis Brooklyn caught a break on UConn's first scoring chance, as Mamadou Diou's shot went wide left of the goal. Junior goalkeeper Jack Binks etched his name on the ledger as he was able to turn away Doudou's shot attempt from the left side, holding the match scoreless at zero. In the 23rd minute, Binks came up with another big save, as he turned away Cyle Larin's shot from just inside the box.
UConn was able to net the match's only goal in the 25th minute as Larin received a long cross from teammate Kwame Awuah. Larin was darting on goal and headed the feed just over the hands of Binks to give the home eleven the 1-0 advantage.
St. Francis Brooklyn came out with more intensity in the second half of play. The visitor's first scoring chance came in the 50th minute when 2012 NEC Rookie of the Year Kevin Correa was able to split through two Huskies defenders on his way to the goal but was denied the tying marker as Andre Blake was able to make a stand-up save.
A minute later, senior forward Gabriel Bagot received a feed from junior Michael Collis on the left side. The Nevers, France native then chipped a shot attempt over Blake's outstretched hands but the game-tying opportunity was turned away by a Huskie defender at the last second.
St. Francis Brooklyn's last chance came in the final ninety seconds as the Terriers set-up a give and go and found Correa streaking to the goal. However, he misfired just wide right of the post. A couple of seconds later UConn tried to increase their total off the foot of Nicholas Zuniga, but the attempt was stopped by Binks.
For the match, St. Francis Brooklyn took five shots, one of which was on target. The Terriers recorded five corner kicks versus two for the hosts. Binks tied his career high with five saves between the pipes.
UConn, finished the night with 14 shots, with six being on target. Andre Blake made one save.
The Terriers will be back in action on Thursday, September 5th as they travel to Annapolis, Maryland to tangle with the Navy Midshipmen. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm.
