Men's Soccer Falls 3-2 to Marist
Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. – Earlier this afternoon, the men's soccer team hosted the Red Foxes of Marist College. Despite the Panthers going up 2-0, Marist surged in the second half to score three straight, stealing a 3-2 win. With the loss Adelphi moves to 1-9, while Marist College improves to 5-4-1.
In the early stages, Marist posed the first scoring threat in the eighth minute when Stephan Brossard penetrated deep into Panther territory and fired a shot from five yards out, but was met by an athletic save by Ahmad Salamah.
Adelphi returned the favor shortly after when Nicholas Costa sent a long pass down field. Catching up to the ball was Brandon Stoneham, and with a defender on him, managed to get close enough to the net and create some room to get a clean shot off, but was stopped by Marist keeper Anthony Sokalski. Less than a minute later, Steve Rivera was inches away from putting in the go-ahead goal, but his shot deflected off where the crossbar and right post meet.
In the 35th minute, Costa sent in a high pass off a corner and connected with Adam Weinzimer whose header was stopped by the keeper. Following the play, a yellow card in the box given to Steven Arraiano resulted in a penalty kick. Taken by Costa, he hit his mark on a low lying shot that found the inside of the right post for the first goal of the game and his second of the season.
Opening up the second, the Panthers wasted no time tacking on another goal. In the 45th minute, Costa blasted a shot on goal that was stopped. However, he picked up the loose ball rebound and tapped it over to Chris Joseph who beat keeper Sokalski for the second goal of the game and his first of his collegiate career.
Marist came back with a goal of their own in the 64th minute when Stephan Brossard picked up a loose ball inside the box, juked toward the right and hit inside of the right post for the Red Foxes' first goal of the game.
Less than a minute later, Adelphi was called for a handball inside the box resulting in penalty kick for Marist. Taken by Simon Laugsand, he aimed right but Salamah made a diving save. However, he was unable to hold onto the ball which gave way to Laugsand to pick up his own rebound and net the equalizer.
In the 85th minute, the Red Foxes struck a third straight time. Brossard picked up a pass from teammate Josh Faga and fired a turnaround shot that nailed the back right side of the net for the eventual game winner.
In a last second attempt, the Panthers raced down field with time nearing the end and with two seconds left, Domenico Parrelli headed a cross from Stoneham that was off the mark by inches just as the 90th minute was reached.
Adelphi held a 16-15 shot advantage, but only had four corner attempts compared to Marist's 10. Salamah made three saves in the loss while his counterpart made five.
The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, October 2 when they travel to Boston, MA to take on the Terriers of Boston University. First kick is slated for a 7 pm start.
