Men's Soccer Stopped by NC State, 2-0
Box Score
Raleigh, NC – Earlier this evening, the men's soccer team took on the Wolfpack of North Carolina State. The Panthers let up one goal two goals split between each half but were not able to respond, dropping the contest by a score of 2-0. With the loss, the Brown and Gold drop to 2-13 while the Wolfpack moves to 8-8.
It was a tightly contested first half with possession split evenly and the shot count 4-3 in favor of the Panthers. Alejandro Penzini registered the first attempt of the game in the third minute on a pass from the right side from Travis Tennie, but his shot was saved by NC State keeper, Fabian Otte. Steve Rivera had an attempt in the 22nd minute when he fired a blast from 25 yards out, but the attempt sailed just high on a NC State keeper deflection.
In the 33rd minute, the Wolfpack had a free kick and registered their first shot off of it, but Connor Agnew's header attempt went just wide right of the net. At the 36th minute mark, a Panther foul set up a free kick for the hosts. Taken by Alex Martinez from the left side, he connected with Agnew for the header that beat Ahmad Salamah on the right for the 1-0 lead.
NC State came out aggressive in the second and capitalized on an early opportunity when Martinez netted his ninth goal of the year on a pass into the box by Nazmi Albadawi, giving NC State the 2-0 lead.
The Panthers played well and matched their opponents in the midfield, winning their fair share of 50-50 balls. Greg Mallia and Penzini accounted for three of the Panther's second half shots, but one was off the mark and two were stopped by Otte.
Adelphi outshot the hosts 8-5 and put four on net while NC State only had two. The Panthers also held a 3-1 corner kick advantage.
"I thought we did a great job of playing soccer in a fantastic environment against an ACC opponent," Head Coach Carlo Acquista said after the game. "I'm proud of the guys playing the full 90 minutes and not giving up. It's tough to give up a set piece goal after outshooting NC State and having more corners."
The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, October 30 when they take on the Lions of Columbia University at 7pm.
