Men's Soccer Wins on Senior Night
The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team (3-13-1, 2-8-0) needed just one goal, fittingly enough from one of their seniors on Senior Night, to claim a 1-0 win over Air Force Academy (3-10-5, 3-2-5) in a Western Athletic Conference matchup tonight on the GCU Soccer Field. It was the final home game of the 2013 season for the Antelopes.
As has been customary for the 'Lopes this season, tonight marked their 10th game decided by one goal, as they also collected their second shutout in 2013.
"It's long overdue," said head coach Petar Draksin. "We have played in so many close games. Tonight, we stayed organized defensively and did a great job overall. The team really battled for one another. This was probably our best game defensively this season. We didn't panic and we kept it together, and that is why the final result was what it was. In Division II, you can get away with certain things that you can't get away with at this level. These guys are getting it. It takes one step at a time."
GCU and Air Force were equal with 12 shots apiece throughout the contest, although the Falcons put five of those on target compared to four for the 'Lopes.
The teams played to a scoreless tie in the first 45 minutes, with the 'Lopes holding the slight advantage in shots, 7-6. The Falcons put three attempts on target, but GCU goalkeeper Felipe Reyes, making his first start of the 2013 season, stopped each of those.
Jamiesh Holait scored the lone goal of the game in the 62nd minute on a corner kick assist from William O'Dwyer. Holait headed the ball past Air Force keeper Jake Schenk to score his first goal of the season and what stood as the game-winner.
"Jamiesh has been unlucky this season," Draksin said. "He has had quite a few headers, but has been unlucky. I'm very excited for him that he finally got the ball in the net. He earned it. He leaped high for that ball and put it away."
Following the GCU goal, the Falcons pressured the 'Lopes defense, taking four shots before time expired. Reyes finished with a career-best five saves en route to also recording his first career shutout.
"Felipe was fantastic tonight," added Draksin. "It was well-deserved and I'm happy for him. I have no doubts in Felipe's ability. We had quite a few seniors out there tonight and they really did an exceptional job."
Alberto Sanchez Garcia paced the 'Lopes offense with four shot attempts, while he, Brandon Hansen, Holait, and Ante Spajic each collected a shot on goal.
The 'Lopes will head out for their final road trip of the season, beginning with a 5 p.m. (Arizona time) contest at Abilene Christian on Sunday. Fans can follow the action by visiting www.gculopes.com.
