Meredith’s Goals Gives Scots First Victory
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Freshman Ian Meredith scored twice, both times from about 18 yards out, to help the Covenant Scots get their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Guilford College on Saturday afternoon.
The Scots, who had scored just a single goal through the first four matches of the year, go to 1-2-2 for the season. Meanwhile, the Quakers drop to 2-3-1 on the year.
Covenant was the aggressor in the first period as they had several early chances to score. Gordon Carpenter just missed on two shot attempts, including one that was saved by Guilford keeper Michael Macvane. Tyler Morrison and Chris Pifer each had chances of their own, but Macvane was able to keep the Scots off the board. Covenant capitalized in the 19th minute when Meredith received a pass from Morrison, dribbled up the field and blasted a shot just past Macvane for the goal to give the Scots a 1-0 lead.
Leading 1-0 at the halftime break, Covenant came out in the second period and wasted no time in adding to its lead. Again it was Meredith, this time in the 46th minute, who was able to beat his defender and rip a shot past Macvane and into the back of the net giving the Scots a 2-0 advantage.
Guilford would not give up and scored off a Covenant own goal in the 78th minute to cut the Scots lead to 2-1. The Quakers’ last attempt to tie the score came in the 85th minute, but Scots keeper John Eger saved Freddy Gomez’s shot that sealed the win for Covenant.
Eger, coming off being named NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week, had another solid performance with 8 saves while allowing just the single goal. Macvane countered with 4 saves and 2 goals allowed for the Quakers.
Covenant will hit the road again on Wednesday, September 21 when they travel to play Oglethorpe University. The Scots next home match is set for September 27 against Tennessee Temple University.
