Mesich's Late Goal Pushes Warhawks to Win
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team extended its win streak to three matches Tuesday afternoon with a 2-1 triumph over St. Olaf (Minn.) in a contest at Fiskum Field.
In the 76th minute, junior midfielder Kevin Mesich (West Allis, Wis./West Allis Hale) controlled a pass from sophomore midfielder Jake Farley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), and volleyed the ball into the lower left corner. Mesich's second goal of the year gave the Warhawks (7-4-1) the lead for good.
In the first half, UW-Whitewater out-shot the Oles (3-11) by a 7-5 margin.
St. Olaf struck first in the 26th minute, but the Warhawks responded two minutes later. Junior forward Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) was tripped in the box, and senior defender Jack Wirth(Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) stepped up and converted the penalty kick, his seventh goal of the season.
The Oles put a shot on net in the 45th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) kept the match level with a save.
UW-Whitewater kept steady pressure on St. Olaf in the second half, posting three shots over the first 20 minutes of play.
After a shot on goal in the 70th and a corner kick in the 73rd, Mesich gave the Warhawks the lead for good with 15 minutes to play in regulation.
Neither team recorded a shot after the deciding goal.
King picked up the win with one save, improving to 5-0 on the season.
The Warhawks continue their seven-match home stretch Wednesday against No. 20 North Park (Ill.). Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Fiskum Field.
