Milwaukee Tops Drake, 2-0
DES MOINES, Iowa - Freshmen Reid Stevenson and Petter Ingebrigtsen both scored and sophomore goalkeeper Liam Anderson posted his first shutout of the season to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Drake University.
The Panthers (2-0-0) were playing in their first road game of the season, topping the Bulldogs (0-1-1) in the rare Sunday night game played at Cownie Soccer Complex.
"I thought we were a much better team in the second half," UWM head coach Kris Kelderman said. "We came out with more energy and fire. I thought we took control of the tempo and created more chances."
Scoreless until just after the second half started, UWM got on the board at the 46:28 mark when Stevenson headed in a corner kick from freshman Magnus Flaatedal for his first collegiate goal.
Fifteen minutes later, Ingebrigtsen netted his second in as many games, finishing off service from the sideline by Stevenson into the box in the 61st minute.
"The freshmen are certainly getting it done," Kelderman said. "This was the first weekend of the season and both teams are not where they want to be. We played two games in three days and got a great effort from the guys today. It was a good sign to see us get stronger as the game went on. Road victories are never easy and this game will give us something to build on."
A little history was made as well, with Ingebrigtsen becoming just the third freshman in the 40-plus year history of the Milwaukee program to score a goal in each of the first two contests of the season.
The story of the weekend has been the contributions of the freshmen to the attack. A group of three newcomers (Ingebrigtsen/Stevenson/Nick Moon) has now accounted for all four goals through the first two games.
In net, Anderson made three saves for his 11th career shutout. He was tested early on in the 12th minute and was up to the task again in the 31st and 40th. No saves were needed after intermission, as the UWM defense held the Drake offense to just three shots in the second 45 minutes of action.
"The fact that we ended up with a shutout shows that our new defensive line this season is very solid in addition to our goalkeeper," Kelderman said. "We had another injury in pregame and had to change the lineup at the last second, but they did not let that bother them - the guys adapted well."
The Panthers finished the night with an 11-10 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Drake did earn seven of the 10 corner kicks on the night, with UWM being whistled for 11 of the 19 fouls.
Senior Laurie Bell made his 2014 debut and did have a team-high four shots, including three on goal.
Up next is the 40th Panther Invitational, as UWM welcomes Gonzaga and Oregon State to Engelmann Stadium for the event. Milwaukee opens play Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the Beavers.
