Monarchs defeat Greyhounds 2-1 in rainy game
NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion (2-0-1) defeats Loyola (0-3-0) 2-1 in a rainy Friday night match at the ODU Soccer Complex. Freshman Milan Devuyst scored the go-ahead goal for the Monarchs to clinch the teams’ second victory of the season. Devuyst earned the teams 'Man of the Match' honors after scoring the game-winning goal, his first of his collegiate career.
The Monarchs got on the scoreboard first in the 25th minute of play as Cole Stringer connected with Jesse Miralrio in front of the net. The goal, the only scoring play of the first half, was Miralrio’s first of the season. Old Dominion led the stats line 8-4 in shots and 5-0 in corner kicks.
Loyola’s Brian Saramago tied up the match in the 57th minute on a cross pass in from Josh Fowale just 11 minutes into the second half. The Monarchs scored the game-winning goal in the 70th minute on a shot by Devusyt with the assist from Niko Klosterhalfen to go up 2-1 with 20 minutes to play.
Old Dominion led with 14 shots to Loyola’s 10 and recorded seven corners to the Greyhounds four. Ten Monarchs took shots in the match with five on frame. Kaio DaSilva, Klosterhalfen, Miralrio and Doni Pollock led with two shots each.
Alex Tiesenhausen advances to 2-0-1 in the net recording three saves on the night while Loyola’s Matt Sanchez drops to 0-3-0, also collecting three saves.
Old Dominion returns to action for the 41st annual ODU Soccer Classic on Sept. 9 and 11. Vermont will travel to the ODU Soccer Complex on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. to kick off the Classic. The Monarchs face the Highlanders of Radford in game two of the Classic on Sunday, Sept. 11 for a 2 p.m. kick.
