MONMOUTH RUNS UNBEATEN STREAK TO 15
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Junior Miguel Alves (Newark, NJ/St. Benedict’s) scored twice as the nationally-ranked No. 22 Monmouth University men’s soccer team played Marist to a 2-2 tie Saturday night at Tenney Stadium. With the tie, the Hawks (11-3-4, 7-0-3 MAAC), who pushed their unbeaten streak to an NCAA Division I-leading 15 games, finish their conference slate unbeaten for the first time since 2010 and the fourth time under Head Coach Robert McCourt.
Monmouth had already clinched the league title and top seed in the conference tournament (Nov. 5-9 in Lake Buena Vista, FL), while Marist (7-8-2, 5-3-2 MAAC) will assume the No. 3 position in the tournament. The Hawks await the winner between eighth-seeded Saint Peter’s and ninth-seeded Manhattan (Thursday, 2 p.m.) in a game to be played Friday at 2:15 p.m. on ESPN3.
Though Monmouth rested a pair of starting midfielders in Colin Stripling (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains Fanwood) and Anderson Asiedu (Dormaa Ahenkro, Ghana/St. Benedict’s), Alves came up big with goals in the 16th and 55th minutes, both providing the equalizer. Junior goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky (Lincoln Park, NJ/DePaul Catholic) made a career-high eight saves to preserve the tie, while his counterpart, Tyler Utheim, made nine saves.
Connor Preece headed in a Steven Arraiano corner kick in the third minute to get the scoring started, before the Hawks responded with Alves banking in a shot from the top of the box. Joey Gudzak (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was credited with the assist.
Marist again scored quickly early in a period when Cameron Harr scored off an assist from Mario Vukadinovic just 3:19 into the second half. Alves had the answer once again in the 55th minute, shooting into the back right corner past Utheim for the equalizer.
For the game, Monmouth edged Marist, 19-18, in shots and 8-5 in corner kicks.
