Navy Men Knock Off #10 Maryland, 2-1
Navy junior forward Jamie Dubyoski scored the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute as Navy (2-1-1) defeated #10 Maryland (1-2-1), 2-1, on Monday evening in front of 2,522 fans at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Maryland is the 2013 NCAA College Cup runner-up.
“It was a good college soccer game with two good teams,” head coach Dave Brandt said. “It could have gone either way, but I’m proud of our guys and it was a good win. But it’s all for naught if we can’t move forward in a positive way.”
Navy was all over Maryland right out of the gates and scored the game’s first goal in just the fourth minute. Junior Derek Vogel sent a wide pass out right to junior P.J. Suess who then passed back in to sophomore Daniel Camuti, who fired a low driving shot past Maryland goalkeeper Zack Steffen form 15 yards out. It was Camuti’s second goal of the season.
Navy controlled play in the first half and outshot the Terrapins, 10-6, in the first 45 minutes.
Maryland evened the game at 1-1 just two minutes into the second half when Alex Shinsky found Jeroen Meefout, who finished from 14 yards out, beating Navy goalkeeper Jackson Morgan.
Just six minutes later, Dubyoski put the Mids back ahead with a superb goal. The play started when freshman Brock Dudley sent a long serve forward from the right side that Vogel flicked on toward goal with his head. Dubyoski ran in, took control of the ball, split two Maryland defenders and chipped the ball over Steffen to put the Mids back on top with 37 minutes to go.
Navy was able to hold off Maryland’s attack and Morgan made a huge save in the 70th minute. Mael Corboz took a free kick from 30 yards out and Morgan made a diving save. However, Morgan could not control the ball and Meefout came charging in for the rebound and collided with Morgan. Morgan was knocked out of the game with a concussion.
Brandt then subbed in freshman goalkeeper Mac Burke, who had only made his collegiate debut on Friday night when he played 26 minutes of Navy’s 5-0 blowout win over Appalachian State.
Burke stood tall for the last 20 minutes and made a big save in the 87th minute on one of Maryland’s final charges. Morgan made four save and was credited with the win.
Navy’s defensive backline had a strong performance, especially its center backs Joseph Greenspan and Sawyer Gilmore. Gilmore, a junior, made his first career start and was playing in just his fourth career game. Gilmore logged the full 90 minutes along side Greenspan in the middle of Navy’s backline.
Shots were even in the game at 14 apiece and Navy held a slight edge in shots on goal, 7-6. Corner kicks were also even at two each.
Vogel had his first two-assist game of his career and Dubyoski scored his fourth career game-winning goal.
Navy earned its first win over Maryland since 1984 and it was Navy’s first win in Annapolis since 1979. Navy’s last win over a ranked opponent was against #20 George Mason, 2-1, on September 19, 2012.
The attendance of 2,522 is a new Navy men’s soccer record at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility and Navy won its 10th straight home game.
Navy will next play at Central Connecticut State on Saturday at 4:30 PM.
“We can play with any team in the country,” Dubyoski said. “But like Coach [Brandt] said, we need to come out of this game with our heads on straight and make sure we get ready for this weekend. This is just the start of the season and it doesn’t mean anything unless we go somewhere from here.”
