Nazareth edges Wis-Oshkosh, 1-0
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Freshman Elizabeth Howell scored her first career goal with 4:51 remaining in regulation to lift Nazareth to a 1-0 victory over Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the consolation game of the Cardinal Classic, hosted by Plattsburgh State. Junior Sarah Eichelberger was named to the all-tournament team for the Golden Flyers.
Sunday's victory notches the first win of the season for Nazareth. Fearing inclement weather, the Nazareth/UW-Oshkosh match was moved up to 9 a.m. Sunday. Despite the change in time, there was about an hour delay during the game due to lightning. The Golden Flyers stand at 1-0-1 going into their next match, September 10th, at Brockport. The Titans fall to 0-2 overall following the loss.
Howell's goal was set up by junior Christine Belding. For the second consecutive day, the Golden Flyers scored in the final minutes of regulation. In Saturday's game, senior Erica Conte found the back of the net with just over a minute to play in the second half to tie the score, 1-1, and force overtime. Plattsburgh eventually advanced to Sunday's tournament title game by outlasting Nazareth 4-3 on penalty kicks.
The consolation match against the Titans featured strong defensive play from both teams. The Golden Flyers' defense allowed Wisconsin-Oshkosh just four total shots. Sophomore Abbie Carey made one save for her first-career shutout.
Nazareth recorded 10 total shots with Eichelberger and Conte tallying three shots and two shots, respectively. Katie Berkopec finished with four saves for the Titans. Each team had two corner kick opportunities.
