No. 13 Colonels fall to No. 5 Trinity in women's soccer
In a battle of two top 15 teams, the No. 13 Centre College women's soccer team fell 2-1 in double overtime to No. 5 Trinity University Friday, Sept. 30 in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels have now dropped two straight matches and fall to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), while the Tigers remain unbeaten and improve to 10-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play.
Centre struck first with a goal from freshman Anne Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ark.) at the 8:33 mark in the first period for a 1-0 lead. Junior Mary Taylor Kersey (Winchester, Ky.) had the assist. The goal was Mitchell's third of the year, while Kersey tallied her seventh assist.
The score remained that way until late in the second half when Emily Jorgens tied the match at one all with just over five minutes to play to force overtime.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first overtime period and 2:52 into the second overtime Trinity's Abigail Loar ended by hitting the back of the net with the game-winner.
The Tigers out-shot Centre 20-4, while the Colonels held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Kelli Lenz (Louisville, Ky.) suffered the loss in goal. Lenz made eight saves on the evening.
Centre will look to get back in the win column Sunday, Oct. 2 against Southwestern University. The SCAC match is set to start at 11 a.m. in Danville, Ky.
