NO. 16 MEN’S SOCCER BEATS WAKE FOREST, 2-0
NEWTON, Mass. – Junior Colin Murphy and freshman Diego Medina-Mendez scored goals to lead the No. 16 Boston College men’s soccer team to a 2-0 win against Wake Forest Friday night at the Newton Campus Field.
Murphy found the back of the net at the 23:52 mark in the first half while Medina-Mendez sealed the game when he scored at 78:22. It was Murphy’s first goal of the season and Medina-Mendez’s fourth. Juniors Kevin Mejia and Charlie Rugg were credited with assists on the first BC goal.
Boston College had a slight 5-3 advantage in shots through the first 20-plus minutes and it was the fifth one that nearly put the Eagles on the board. Mejia narrowly missed his first goal of the season when a blast off his foot was denied by the post.
Murphy succeeded on his chance for BC in the 24th minute when he put away a shot from roughly seven yards out to the left of the keeper.
Wake Forest put a shot on goal in the 34th minute – its only one of the game – but junior Justin Luthy made the save to secure the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Demon Deacons’ (5-5-1, 2-3-0 ACC) best chance to equalize came in the 72nd minute of the second half. Wake earned a corner kick that Ross Tomaselli sent into the box. The ball found Danny Wenzel who headed the ball towards the net, but it hit the crossbar and stayed out of the goal.
Jared Watts added another shot attempt less than three minutes later that went wide and then BC put the match out of reach. Medina-Mendez intercepted an errant pass and raced down the field in the 79th minute. He finished the opportunity and beat the keeper to the bottom right corner to give the Eagles the 2-0 cushion.
Luthy only needed to make one save for BC in goal to record his fourth shutout of the season.
The Eagles (8-3-0, 2-2-0) are back in action on Tuesday when they host Harvard at 4 p.m. at the Newton Campus Field.
