No. 17 Cal Knocks Off Top-Ranked UCLA, 1-0
LOS ANGELES – The No. 17 California Golden Bears (10-3-1, 4-2-1 Pac-12) completed a season sweep of No. 1 UCLA (10-4-4, 5-2-2 Pac-12) for the first time since 2006 after defeating the Bruins, 1-0, at Drake Stadium on Sunday evening. Senior forward Connor Hallisey scored the match’s lone goal in the 47th minute, while redshirt senior goalkeeper Justin Taillole made three saves and earned his third shutout of the season.
Cal got the first look on goal in the 10th minute of action when sophomore forward Christian Thierjung went head-to-head with UCLA goalkeeper Earl Edwards with a shot that soared just high of the goal. Fifteen minutes later, Hallisey created another quality chance for the Bears, but his shot was deflected by UCLA defender Chase Gasper off of the goal post and cleared out by Edwards.
Immediately after the break, the Bears broke through when Edwards turned the ball over inside the box to a waiting Hallisey, who found the back of the net for his eighth goal of the season. Hallisey, who leads the Pac-12 in points per game, recorded a game-best four shots on the night.
UCLA took a chance in the 72nd minute after forward Larry Ndjock found a hard cross inside the box, but Taillole logged his third save of the night to silence the Bruins.
With five minutes left in regulation, Salcedo shook off a pair of UCLA defenders and faced Edwards head on before the Bruins' keeper made a sliding save to hold Cal without an insurance goal.
"A number of players are in good form and have further room to grow this season," said head coach Kevin Grimes. "We look forward to getting back to training this week to get that accomplished."
The Golden Bears return to action on Friday, Nov. 7, when they host Oregon State at 1 p.m., before rounding out the weekend with a home contest against Washington on Sunday, Nov. 9. Both games will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks and live stats will be available on CalBears.com.
