BERKELEY – Despite outshooting the opposition by double-digit figures, the No. 15 California women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 19 Santa Clara on Thursday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Santa Clara got on the board in the 30th minute and the Bears, who pressed for the majority of the second half, could not equalize.

“In every area of the game other than the score, I felt like our team dominated the match,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “Santa Clara came in with a very well-organized game plan. I credit them with an excellent gameplan and for sticking to it thorough the game.”

In the 30th minute, Santa Clara’s Sarah Jackson dribbled in the box before shooting it on the ground to the lower left corner.

Though Santa Clara took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break, at that point, Cal was outshooting the Broncos 5-2 with four corner kicks to Santa Clara’s one. Cal then doubled their offensive output in the second stanza, outshooting SCU 11-1. The Bears’ collective 16 shots forced Santa Clara keeper Andi Tostanoski to make nine saves between the posts.

“We’re not unhappy with the how we played, but we are unhappy with the result,” McGuire said. “We have to grown and learn to put away our chances. But the good thing for us is that the team is very motivated. They know that we’re going to back even stronger after this loss.”

Cal drops to 2-1-0 with two wins already in its pocket thanks to a 3-0 season-starting win over Nevada and a 5-2 victory against San Jose State. The Broncos improve to 1-1-0 after a season-opening 6-1 loss to No. 1 Stanford.

The last time Cal and Santa Clara met was in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, when the Bears advanced to the second round on penalty kicks.

The Bears look to rebound on the national stage – taking on No. 13 Missouri on Sunday in Cal’s first-ever Pac-12 Networks broadcast. The Tigers and Bears square off at 3 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
