No. 21 UAB Falls To South Carolina, 1-0
NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 21 UAB men’s soccer team fell to South Carolina, 1-0, Friday afternoon in the Conference USA Championship Semifinals at the ODU Soccer Complex.
“I’m extremely disappointed,” head coach Mike Getman said. “We did everything but put the ball in the goal. We created enough chances to score three or four, tonight it just wouldn’t go in. I was proud of how our guys battled until the end. This team fights for the full 90 (minutes) every match. Now we will catch our breath and see what the NCAA committee says on Monday.”
UAB (11-7-1, 5-3 C-USA) had its best chance to score in the 39th minute on a penalty kick, but Darion Copeland’s shot was turned away by Gamecock goalkeeper Marco Velez.
South Carolina broke through in the 67th minute for the game winner. After a corner kick was deflected near the net, Gamecock freshman Mikkel Knudsen, the league freshman of the year and winner of the Golden Boot Award, put the header in high to make it a 1-0 match.
Both teams took 15 shots each while the Blazers put four on target. Copeland finished with three shots on frame while Mathieu Laurent had UAB’s other attempt on target.
UAB’s run in the championship concludes, while the Gamecocks will advance to Sunday’s championship match against the winner of the Charlotte/Old Dominion semifinal game.
The Blazers will find out their postseason fate on Monday when the 2014 NCAA Tournament bracket is announced. The selection show will broadcast on NCAA.com at 12 p.m. CT.
