No. 21 UAB shuts out South Carolina, 1-0
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 21 UAB men’s soccer team defeated South Carolina, 1-0, Saturday night in Columbia at Stone Stadium.
“It was a great win against a very good team,” head coach Mike Getman said. “I thought we were excellent for the first 80 minutes. They put us under a lot of pressure at the end, but we managed to preserve the shutout. A big three points on the road and on national TV.”
The Blazers (7-4-1, 2-1-0 C-USA) held the Gamecocks scoreless for their second shutout of the season, as goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky totaled three saves to shut down the South Carolina offense.
Junior forward Freddy Ruiz recorded his team-leading sixth goal in the 70th minute off a Lars Willemse assist to provide the game-winner, the fifth different game this season Ruiz has found the back of the net.
As a team UAB took 11 shots to the Gamecocks’ 13. The two teams took a combined 17 corner kicks as DeAndre Robinson, Ruiz and Pachinno Roberts had two shots each.
UAB will have a week off before returning to the pitch next Saturday, Oct. 18, at home against Marshall at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field.
